Hesher

Like any good heavy metal song, “Hesher” slams you in the face from the opening frame and never lets up. The impetus of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s performance as the title character is one smoking guitar riff after another. His random acts of vulgarity and violence are the thudding double-bass of Metallica’s “And Justice for All.” His existential angst is a driving bass-line. The whole movie is as inappropriate as a fart in church – as crass and untactful as a son telling his mom about his favorite means of masturbation. But life isn’t always nice to us…and neither is Hesher. But sometimes it’s blunt-force-trauma we need to knock us out of the rut we’re in. It’s not pretty but it’s beautiful the way these characters find sanctuary in a worldwide sanitarium. “Hesher” blew my socks off. And I don’t give a good shit if you’re offended…rent it anyway.
