An Horry County police detective was jailed this morning on charges of criminal domestic violence after he argued with his girlfriend about the Super Bowl, according to authorities.

John David Gonska, 39, of Myrtle Beach, was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center at 12:12 a.m. today on a charge of first-offense criminal domestic violence, jail records show. Bail has not been set on the charge and Gonska remains in custody.

Horry County police Sgt. Robert Kegler said Gonska has been with the department for six years. Gonska has been suspended from his position without pay until the case is resolved.

An Horry County incident report showed that police were called to Gonska’s home about 10:30 p.m. Sunday for a domestic violence complaint. A 31-year-old, who is Gonska’s girlfriend, told officers that they were watching a football game on television when they started to argue about plans for the Super Bowl game.

The woman, who has been in a relationship with Gonska for 11 months, told officers that Gonska got aggressive with her when she tried to grab a beer from his hand, according to the report. The woman said Gonska hurt her thumb when he grabbed her.

The woman said Gonska walked into a nearby bathroom and they continued to argue when she followed him, according to the report. The woman said Gonska charged toward her, choked her and hit her in the face.

Officers noted multiple wounds on the woman including marks on her shoulder, neck, chin and cut on her lip, according to the report. Gonska told officers the woman scratched his arm and both refused medical treatment.

More details will be posted as they become available.
