Over 2,000 Santee Electric Cooperative customers in Georgetown lost power earlier this morning because of electrical issues at a substation caused by a squirrel.

"We had some electronics that malfunctioned at substation in Georgetown," said Adrel Langley, spokeswoman for the cooperative. She said a squirrel happened to cause a grounding at a critical part of the substation, causing the malfunction.

She said the power outage began around 8:15 a.m., but that by around noon all customers had their power back.

Langley said those customers are getting power through another substation until the main one is fixed.

"We’ve got personnel on the scene working now," she said.

But she said even when the power is put back through its normal station customers shouldn't see any difference.

"There shouldn't be any more disturbances," she said.
