LUMBERTON, N.C. -- Democratic Rep. Mike McIntyre is getting another term in Congress after surviving a challenge from Republican candidate Ilario Pantano.
With six counties reporting in the 10-county district, McIntyre held a 54 percent to 46 percent lead over Pantano.
McIntyre did as well as any Democrat in Brunswick County voting, tallying 17,841 votes to 21,819 cast for Pantano.
McIntyre's votes constituted nearly 45 percent of the total on a night when Democratic candidates were lucky to get more than 35 percent of the vote.
That meant McIntyre was the only Democrat who saw a significant vote from voters registered Republican and unaffiliated in Brunswick County.
McIntyre was first elected to his 7th District seat more than a decade ago.
He's a conservative Democrat who voted against President Obama's health care proposal, but negative advertisements against him have portrayed the lawmaker as a close ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Pantano is a former Marine who rejoined the military after Sept. 11.
He was later charged with murder for actions in Iraq but the charges were eventually dropped.
He once worked on Wall Street and believes that experience would help him find solutions to improve the economy and create jobs.
The district covers the southeastern part of North Carolina.
