Georgetown steel mill to open once again

The ArcelorMittal steel mill in Georgetown will be making preparations to reopen over the next few weeks.

"The decision has been made to re-open Georgetown," said James Sanderson, the president of the local united steel workers union.

Yesterday at a meeting with company officials Sanderson said he was told that maintenance workers will be called back to the mill in the next few weeks to begin repairing equipment so full-scale production can begin in the next few months.

Coast RTA General Manager Myers Rollins said the mass transit system’s board of directors will be given a presentation detailing new routes along the Grand Strand at the upcoming March 28 meeting.

He said after the necessary maintenance is made to the plant, workers will begin to be called back to the plant.

He said more details about the re-opening of the plant will be available after a meeting tomorrow morning, but said he expects the plant to be at full-production by January.

"At that time we'll have 240 employees there," he said. "It will be ramped up within a three month period."

But, he said,"in order to keep the steel mill open we're going to have to get that port dredged."

Sanderson is meeting with members of the steel workers union this afternoon to give them the news.
