Police say two South Carolina men drowned after the car they were riding in plunged into a creek.

Charleston County Deputy Coroner Brittney Martin told The Post and Courier that 28-year-old Roman Holmes of Hollywood and 19-year-old Deangelo Holmes of Adams Run died Saturday.

A third man escaped the car and was treated at a local hospital.

Seven saved from capsized boat

The Coast Guard rescued seven people from a capsized boat about 30 miles off the coast of South Carolina.

The Coast Guard said in a news release that four adults and three children were rescued about 6 a.m. Sunday from a 38-foot powerboat.

The wife of the boat owner reported the party overdue Saturday night.

The Coast Guard said the people had been in the water about 20 hours.

They were taken to the Medical University of South Carolina for evaluation.

Their conditions were not immediately available.

Help needed for shore sweep Sept. 18

Volunteers are needed for the 22nd annual Beach Sweep/River Sweep that runs from 9 a.m. until noon Sept. 18.

Each year, thousands participate in South Carolina's largest one-day litter cleanup of beaches, marshes and waterways, said Carlos Chacon of the Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island.

The S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and S.C. Department of Natural Resources organize the statewide event, held in conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup.

Last year, more than 4,500 volunteers removed 45.5 tons of debris statewide, according to a news release from the Coastal Discovery Museum.

In its 21-year history, 1,056 tons of litter have been collected -- and recycled when possible -- the release said.

To volunteer, come to one of the designated sites between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.

HARBOUR TOWN

Old oak needs TLC and cash to survive

The good news is that Harbour Town's Liberty Oak will survive its worst insect infestation in at least 30 years, experts say.

The not-so-good news is that its survival will require a lot of work -- and money.

By year's end, about $4,000 to $5,000 will have been spent to take care of the tree, officials say.

Experts said the revered tree is in good shape, given its age of 225 to 250 years.

Arborists say it will be fine once the insects are removed.

The insects, lecanium scale, range in size from 1/8- to 1/2-inch long.

They suck up the tree's sap, causing branches to die as they lose nutrients.

Arborists applied insecticide in early June.

The Liberty Oak's next treatment will be in October, when it will receive a trunk injection of insecticide.

The insecticide will go into the tree's sap, instantly killing the lecanium when they suck it up through the branches.

Boat, ferry collide; none hurt

The Coast Guard says no one was hurt in a boat collision in the ferry channel to North Carolina's Outer Banks.

The Coast Guard said in a news release that a 35-foot motor yacht hit a ferry boat Saturday night.

The ferry Carteret was not damaged and none of its eight passengers or crew were injured.

Two crew members and two dogs were removed from the damaged yacht and cleared by medical workers with no serious injuries.

The yacht was towed to shallow water.

The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the crash.

DURHAM

10 injured in drive-by shooting

Durham police say as many as 10 people are hurt after people in a car fired shots at a home.

Police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said two victims were seriously injured in the shooting about 4 a.m. Sunday.

No one's name was released and conditions on the other eight victims weren't available.

Witnesses told investigators that a car stopped in front of the house and opened fire.

Investigators are still trying to determine a motive and gather information about suspects.
