Police have charged an 18-year-old from Shallotte, N.C., in a hit-and-run crash that killed a woman earlier this month.
Derek Anthony Stanley II is charged with hit-and-run with death involved, according to Nicole Aiello, public information officer for North Myrtle Beach. He was arrested and charged Thursday, Aiello said. She did not say where he was arrested.
Stanley is charged in connection with a collision Aug. 17 that resulted in the death of Corrisa Irvin of New Hampshire. The crash happened along U.S. 17 in North Myrtle Beach.
A North Myrtle Beach judge, Blake Martin, set bail for Stanley at $15,000. Stanley faces up to 25 years in prison and a fine between $10,000 and $25,000, according to a news release from Aiello.
After the collision police released a possible description of the suspect vehicle, which they described as a van likely having front-end damage on its right side and possibly to the windshield, and sought the public's help in finding the vehicle.
Aiello did not say Thursday whether tips from the public, based on the information from police, helped lead to Stanley's arrest.
Irvin, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene of the U.S. 17 collision that happened around 1:30 a.m. between Ocean Creek Drive and 48th Street South near a Cracker Barrel restaurant. Authorities think she was struck and killed while walking home after work. She worked at Barefoot Landing and lived in the Windy Hill area of North Myrtle Beach.
Her death was the third within a month along the Grand Strand that involved a pedestrian and vehicle.
A woman was killed Aug. 12 in an evening hit-and-run while crossing the street at 21st Avenue North at Greens Boulevard. Police filed no charges in that incident, which killed 20-year-old Delva Bondaeva.
Earlier, on July 23, Steven Roberge, 33, died after he was struck by a truck while crossing U.S. 17 Business in Surfside Beach. Police said Roberge was in the median south of S.C. 544 at 9:55 p.m. when he was hit and killed by a pickup truck.
Aiello said North Myrtle Beach police are continuing their investigation into the death of Irvin but no additional charges are expected.
