Myrtle Beach International Airport hit a record in July for the number of people coming in and out of the airport, breaking 100,000 passengers in both counts for the first time.

More than 117,000 people got off planes in Myrtle Beach in July and more than 111,000 people got on planes at Myrtle Beach International airport in July. That number was up from any month back through at least 2007-- which was a record-breaking year for the airport, said Lauren Morris, spokeswoman for the Horry County department of airports.

"They're just very positive numbers. You cannot have flown in or out over the last few months and not noticed an increase in people," Morris said. "Since May, every month has broken some sort of record or another. We're ready for the expansion. We need the space and that's great."

Morris attributed the gain to new service that's been added by several air carriers over the last few months and to the out-of-market advertising being done by the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday.
