St. Frances Animal Center reopens
The St. Frances Animal Center in Georgetown will reopen today, three weeks after a canine distemper outbreak forced it to close.
Executive director Nancy Campos said last week that the disinfection process was finished and that shelter officials have completed what they needed to do.
The shelter, which closed after two distemper outbreaks occurred within weeks of each other, has remained closed to ensure there are no new outbreaks.
Campos said that in honor of the shelter reopening reduced adoption fees will be offered.
"Our animals are anxious and awaiting the people to come in and see them and provide homes for them," she said.
She said the public has been supportive of the shelter, continuing to call to ask about animals posted on its website.
Campos said they are looking forward to the people coming in "to put their hands on them and meet them face to face, or I might say nose to nose."
Area shelters have had problems the past couple years with distemper, a sometimes fatal canine virus transmitted through the air that can have symptoms similar to an upper respiratory infection.
The Grand Strand Humane Society and the Horry County Humane Society both closed temporarily during the winter of 2009 due to distemper.
The Horry County Humane Society shelter was taken over by Horry County in July 2009, partly because of the distemper outbreak.
