Body of missing swimmer found in Georgetown County

Emergency officials in Georgetown County recovered the body of a 51-year-old man from the Santee River Saturday morning after he drown while swimming near the Santee community, authorities said.

Gene Grayson, a Santee community resident, drowned while swimming in the Santee River near Pole Yard landing on Friday, Coroner Kenny Johnson said. Witnesses reported the incident Friday night after seeing Grayson go under and not resurface, authorities said.

The Georgetown Sheriff's Office and emergency personnel responded around 7:40 p.m. Authorities searched until 2 a.m. early Saturday morning and resumed around 7:30 a.m. with the assistance of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources Aviation Division. The body was recovered around 10:00 a.m. Saturday.
