Man beaten up after offering ride

A 35-year-old Conway man told police he was robbed when he gave a woman a ride home after he met her at a Myrtle Beach bar, according to a police report.

The man told police he met the woman early Monday at a bar about 2:45 a.m. and drove her to Sixth Avenue North in Myrtle Beach, where she directed him to park his car and walk about a block away, police said.

The man said two men beat him and robbed him, according to the report. The man's head and eye was swollen, but he declined EMS treatment. Police tried to find the assailants in the area, but did not locate them.

Robbery suspect locked up

A Myrtle Beach man remained jailed Tuesday after two Virginia teens told police he robbed them of cash inside an Ocean Boulevard motel room, according to a police report.

Sceneca Devon Benning, 32, was charged with public intoxication, possession of ice, crank or crack cocaine and strong-arm robbery following the incident at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Boardwalk Beach motel at 2300 N. Ocean Blvd., police said.

Benning is being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center on $15,000 bail.

A 19-year-old woman from Roanoke, Va., told police she and her 18-year-old friend from Fincastle, Va., met Benning and another man while walking along Ocean Boulevard about 1:30 a.m., according to the report. The men were invited back to their hotel room and the woman said she went to the balcony to smoke when the incident occurred.

The woman said Benning screamed at her friend, threatened to harm her and took the woman's cash, according to the report. The woman said Benning tried to hit the other man, who left the room and she didn't see him again.

The woman called police, and when they arrived, Benning got upset and threatened her, according to the report. Benning ran out of the room, but an officer stopped him. Police found the woman's cash and driver's license in Benning's possession along with a note he forced her to write saying she gave him the money.

Hotel urination turns into attack

Two Aynor men were assaulted after one of the men confronted a third man about urinating in the hallway of a Myrtle Beach motel, according to a police report.

A 74-year-old man suffered several facial fractures, cuts and possible permanent vision problems after the incident that occurred at Midtown Motel located at 309 Eighth Ave. N., in Myrtle Beach, police said. A 13-year-old girl also told police she was hit in the face, chest and arm during the incident.

A 46-year-old man told police that about 7:50 p.m. Saturday the older man confronted a man urinating in the motel hallway, according to the report. The urinating man, who appeared to be intoxicated, attacked the older man and the 46-year-old man went to help, but was jumped from behind.

The younger man told police one of the assailants punched him in the face while the other assaulted the older man, according to the report. The girl told police she tried to get an assailant off the younger man and was struck her during the incident.

The men ran to a vehicle that was in the parking lot and drove away, according to the report. The older man was taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center for treatment while the younger man and the teen were treated at the scene by EMS.

Man charged after bottle thrown

A Myrtle Beach man was charged with first-degree assault and battery after a man reported being hit in the head with a beer bottle at an Ocean Boulevard apartment, according to a police report.

Robert R. Johnson, 48, was arrested after police found a 53-year-old man with a cut on his head that was bleeding outside 919 N. Ocean Blvd., police said. The victim told police Johnson knocked on his door, threatened him and then threw a beer bottle at him.

Johnson told police he threw the bottle at the victim because the victim had a baseball bat, according to the report. A witness told police she heard Johnson threaten the victim, but she didn't see the altercation.

Lifelong Learning fall catalog out

The fall catalog for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Coastal Carolina University is now available, featuring a wide variety of non-credit courses for adult learners, according to a release from the university.

More than 300 classes and workshops are planned for the fall term, Sept. 13 to Dec. 15, at three centers: Conway, Foundation Center at U.S. 501 and Winyah Road; Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach Education Center at 79th Avenue North and U.S. 17 Bypass; and Litchfield, Waccamaw Higher Education Center at 160 Willbrook Blvd..

Courses include art and photography, computer technology, foreign languages, history and government, literature and writing, music, theater and film, personal growth and skills, religion and philosophy, science and nature, and history and nature excursions. Free Week, held Sept. 7 to 9, will offer free lectures and demonstrations of upcoming courses and special interest clubs, and gives students the opportunity to meet teachers and staff; learn about OLLI's website and online WebAdvisor; get registration assistance; and secure parking permits and photo IDs.
