An S.C. Highway Patrol officer was arrested on felony drug charges in Horry County on Friday night and remains the subject of an ongoing investigation, authorities said.

Lance Cpl. Bobby Lee Spurgeon is charged with manufacturing, distribution or possession of a schedule II product, cocaine or cocaine derivative, said Lt. Keith Strickland of Horry County Police.

Spurgeon was released from J. Reuben Long Detention Center on $10,000 bail around 4 p.m. on Saturday, according to center staff.

Further details were unavailable Saturday night.

"It's an ongoing investigation that we anticipate going through the weekend," Strickland said. "We don't want to reveal techniques ... for fear of compromising it."

Spurgeon has been fired from his position with the highway patrol, said Sid Gaulden, spokesman for the S.C. Department of Public Safety. The highway patrol has been cooperating with the Horry County Police investigation, he said. Police and highway patrol will make an announcement regarding the arrest this week, he said.
