June 13, 2010

A woman was sent to a Wilmington hospital after being shot in the head Saturday during a carjacking in Conway.

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the crime.

Conway police said about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, officers sent to a home on Lakeside Drive found the woman bleeding profusely and holding a rag to her head. She told the officers she was at the Sav-Way gas station and a young man asked her for a ride.

She agreed and they left the store, but while she was following his directions to his destination, the police report says, the boy began making advances on the woman and pulled out a handgun.

The woman said she she tried to run the car into a ditch and then into a tree in an attempt to distract him so she could get away, but he fired a shot that hit her in the right side of her head.

She jumped from the car and ran to a nearby home and beat on the door. The homeowners helped her and called 911.

The woman was taken to Conway Medical Center for treatment and later air lifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for further treatment.

The police department said that just before 1 a.m. Sunday, officers saw the woman's car being driven by a young man on Ninth Avenue. They tried to pull the car over, but the driver wrecked at the dead end on Sixth Avenue and the driver ran toward Nelson Street.

Officers caught up and the boy was taken to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice Center in Columbia.
