MYRTLE BEACH -- The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are searching for some offensive consistency - the kind that will keep manager Rocket Wheeler from talking about "wasted" outings from his starting pitchers.

Myrtle Beach got another one of those "wasted" nights on Monday, when it lost 4-1 to Winston-Salem at BB&T Coastal Field.

Wheeler's team managed just four hits against the Dash, leaving starting pitcher Randall Delgado's performance just as Wheeler described. Delgado threw 62/3 innings, giving up five hits and three runs. Two of those scores came off a fluke play after he had been pulled.

Still, the offense didn't give him much help.

If you subtract the team's walk-loaded, 15-run game against Frederick on April 15, the Pelicans have averaged a little more than just two runs per game since their season-opening homestand.

"It's just not going our way right now," catcher Matt Kennelly said. "We'll turn it around. We got a bunch of talented guys. I believe these guys can do it. We've got a solid bunch of people in place; they can swing the bat."

The Pelicans went 1-5 during the season's first road trip, and hopes of turning it around at home didn't pan out Monday.

The Pelicans left the bases loaded in the fourth inning when Jahdiel Santamaria grounded into a fielder's choice. The inning was the team's best chance for runs early in the game.

The Dash made the Pelicans' missed opportunity count two innings later when they got a sacrifice fly from third baseman Jon Gilmore, leading to the game's first score. The top of the seventh, however, is when things started to get hairy for Myrtle Beach.

Delgado was pulled with runners at first and second, and reliever Yelier Castro gave up an inside-the-park, three-run home run to Dash center fielder and No. 9 hitter Justin Greene, the first hitter Castro faced.

The former Francis Marion player lined a screamer to right, where it bounced under the glove of a diving Adam Milligan. Both base runners scored easily, but Castro fell flat on his stomach about three-quarters between third and home.

He lay there momentarily, believing he was about to be tagged out; however, the relay throw got away from Kennelly. Greene popped up and beat the tag at the plate.

"Milligan made a [heck] of a try to catch that ball," Wheeler said. "He missed it. You tip your hat to the guy because he's busting his tail."

While it was later ruled an error on second baseman Yoel Campusano's throw home, it made the score 4-0, and the Pelicans' offense couldn't make up the difference.

Wheeler said much of the offensive stagnancy can be credited to the lineup shift necessary after outfielder Cole Miles went down with a deep bruise in his right leg during the season-opening series against Wilmington. Miles was placed on the disabled list, although he will be available for Wednesday's game.

Miles did take batting practice with the team prior to Monday's loss.

That pregame work, Kennelly said, will eventually help all of the team's hitters - not just Miles.

"We come in early and do our hitting and everything," Kennelly said. "There's plenty of more at-bats in the season. ... The pitchers are doing a great job, and I'm sure the hitters will come around."
