The Horry County Coroner's Office is still working to find and notify the family of a 49-year-old man who stabbed himself to death at the Myrtle Beach Airport, said Chris Burroughs, a deputy coroner.

The name of the man will not be released until the family has been notified, Burroughs said.

The man was a Myrtle Beach resident, Burroughs said, but his roommate was unable to identify any family members.

If family cannot be found, Burroughs said the coroner's office may release the name and ask for the public's help in finding his family. Burroughs said he would have to discuss the matter with Coroner Robert Edge before making a decision.

The incident occurred on the airfield away from the airport terminal and tarmac, according to authorities.

An airport employee spotted the man at 10:45 a.m. and confronted him, at which point he stabbed himself several times, officials said.

The intruder, who was not a passenger of any flight, suffered several superficial stab wounds to the abdomen and a more serious wound to his upper chest, said Horry County Police Sgt. Robert Kegler. He died at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center at 11:05 a.m., Kegler said.

How the man got into a restricted area of Myrtle Beach International Airport remains under local and federal investigation.
