A parade of vintage vehicles rolled into town Thursday for the popular Pee Dee Street Rodders event, drawing thousands of antique car and truck owners, auto enthusiasts and curious visitors to its headquarters at the former Myrtle Square Mall site Friday and Saturday.

Just around the corner will be another gathering that's expected to bring 6,000 cheerleaders and their families to town Friday through Sunday - a competition featuring 195 teams that will fill the Myrtle Beach Convention Center and its parking lot.

To solve the expected parking and traffic challenge presented by the two events, the city of Myrtle Beach plans to provide free shuttle buses between Broadway at the Beach and the Street Rodders show from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today and Saturday, according to city spokesman Mark Kruea. The free buses will make the round trip about every 10 minutes.

The Grand Strand Humane Society also will be operating a smaller fundraising parking lot at the corner of Oak Street and 27th Avenue North, where parking will be $5 per car.

There also is public parking at meters on the east side of Kings Highway, Kruea said.
