Driver checkpoints to ramp up in April
Georgetown police, along with the 15th Judicial Circuit Law Enforcement Network, plan to conduct traffic safety checkpoints in April in the city, according to a news release.
"These safety checkpoints are necessary tools to aide law enforcement in an attempt to keep the motoring public safe," Georgetown Police Chief Paul Gardner said.
Officers from agencies in Horry and Georgetown counties are members of the network and will assist with the checkpoints.

Police investigate student's sexual assault
Myrtle Beach police are investigating a report that a 12-year-old girl was sexually assaulted, according to a police report.
Officers were called to the city's intermediate school at about 3 p.m. Tuesday after a principal was told by the mother of another student about the incident, police said.
The girl told her friends at school about the incident that occurred on March 11, according to the report. School officials asked her about the incident, but she denied it, even though several of her friends confirmed the story she had told them earlier.
The girl's mother told school officials that her boyfriend would never harm the girl, according to the report. The girl and her mother had left the school when police arrived.

Woman: Police shot dog inside its fence
A Conway woman told police someone shot her dog while it was inside her fenced backyard, according to a police report.
The 48-year-old woman called police to the 1000 block of Sycamore Street to report she heard a loud pop about 9 p.m. Sunday and found one of her three dogs injured in the backyard, police said.
The woman took the dog, a Shih Tzu, to an emergency veterinary office for treatment, according to the report. A report from the veterinarian showed the dog was shot through the ear and the bullet traveled down its back before fragmenting in its hips. The dog is expected to recover.
Police were investigating the incident.

Police: Boyfriend punched woman in face
A Conway man remained jailed Wednesday on $5,000 bail after police say he punched his girlfriend in the face and locked her out of an apartment, according to a police report.
Nicky Earl Jordan, 49, was charged with second-offense criminal domestic violence after police were called to 1118 Boundary St., for a domestic dispute, police said.
Officers found a 46-year-old woman outside an apartment and the woman told police Jordan had punched her in the face, took her keys and then pushed her out of the apartment and locked the door, according to the report.
Initially Jordan refused to open the door for officers, but once he did talk to police Jordan denied hitting or pushing the woman, according to the report. Officers noted there was swelling under the woman's eye.

Police search for cigarette thief
Myrtle Beach police searched Tuesday for a man accused of stealing five packs of cigarettes from a convenience store while the clerk was cleaning outside, according to a police report.
Police were called at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday to the Kangaroo Express located at 3791 North Oleander Lane for the incident, police said.
The clerk told police that she was changing trash bags at the gas pumps when a man and woman drove up and walked into the store, according to the report. The woman told police she went in to the store, but the woman came out and tried to distract her.
The clerk said she saw the man behind the counter putting cigarettes into a bag so she confronted him, according to the report. The man gave back some of the cigarettes, but left with five packs valued at $15.85.

2 candidates file election notice
Two candidates filed election paperwork in Horry County Wednesday. Republican Paul Price filed for the Horry County Council District 5 seat. Democrat Butch Johnson filed for the S.C. representative, District 58 seat. No candidates filed in Georgetown County Wednesday. Filing will close at noon on March 30.

Census conflates Shallotte and Shores
Census forms mailed to residents in Carolina Shores incorrectly identify the town as Shallotte, according to Lisa Anglin, Carolina Shores deputy town clerk.
Anglin said the town has contacted the Census Bureau about the error and will inform residents what it finds out.

Census workers to count islanders
The U.S. Census Bureau will count heads manually on Brunswick County beach islands because of the number of second homes and rental cottages among those that are occupied by permanent residents, according to information from the David Hewett, town manager of Holden Beach.
