Estuary
Look For | Red drum, spotted seatrout, black drum, sheepshead.
Comments | Capt. Mark Dickson of Shallow-Minded Inshore Charters in Little River took Jay Gregg of the South Carolina Outdoors television program out on Monday to film a segment for the show. Dickson and Gregg caught and released 15 red drum near the state line behind Bird Island. Dickson found the reds in a pool about 3-4 feet deep, with five of the fish above South Carolina's 15-23 inch slot limit. The duo used Gulp shrimp. "They're not moving much," said Dickson. "Once you find them, they are there." The program will air on WWMB Channel 8 on Feb. 28 at 8:30 a.m. on Time-Warner Cable. Tom Craddock of Inlet Convenience reports Murrells Inlet anglers have had success with sheepshead at the jetties using fiddler crabs for bait. "There's a few nice ones and a lot of small ones," said Craddock.
Inshore
Look For | Black sea bass, sheepshead, black drum.
Comments | How's the fishing on Grand Strand piers? Bill Craven of Apache Pier had an answer Thursday morning. "Dogfish and that's it," said Craven. "We had a good snowball fight on Saturday." Although fishing has been at a minimum, black sea bass on inshore reefs and hard-bottom areas are easily the best bet for anglers itching to get out there and the weekend forecast looks favorable. Work bottom spots in depths of 40 feet and beyond and remember the 12-inch minimum size limit for the species. Sheepshead are also available on inshore bottom spots. The surface ocean water temperature Thursday at the Apache Pier Data Station was a 46.3 degrees at 10 a.m.
Offshore
Look For | Wahoo, blackfin tuna, bluefin tuna, black sea bass, triggerfish, amberjack.
Comments | Offshore trolling trips look doable this weekend with warmer weather and lighter winds in the forecast. Freshwater
Look For | Crappie, bream, catfish, shad, bass.
Comments | With rainfall and snow melt way above average, area rivers are overflowing with plenty of water out in the swamps and many boat landings flooded out. "The places you can put in are Samworth, Conway Marina and Bucksport," said Jay Booth of Fishermen's Headquarters. Still, anglers have options to catch fish. Crappie are hitting minnows in 12 feet of water at Bucksport and Samworth. The bream bite, including morgans, is best at Bucksport with worms fished on the bottom in 12 feet of water. Catfish action has been good on cut shad on both the Great Pee Dee and Waccamaw rivers below Thoroughfare Creek. Booth called bass action "fair" at Samworth on shiners.
