MYRLTE BEACH -- Myrtle Beach High quarterback Everett Golson must have spent a lot of time stewing over not throwing a touchdown pass for the first time all season last week.
The junior phenom more than made up for it Friday night by throwing eight touchdown passes in a 55-13 victory over North Charleston in the third round of the Class AAA playoffs.
"I felt like we really jelled tonight. All year we have talked about peaking, but we really haven't done it [until tonight]," said Golson, who completed 27-of-36 passes for 444 yards for career highs in both yardage and touchdowns. "It looks like an individual stat, but it really wasn't. It was a team stat."
Golson was on fire from the start, completing all three passes on the Seahawks' opening possession and capping the drive with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Dallas Goodman.
After the Cougars (11-2) fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Golson went up top again to Goodman for a 33-yard score on the first play. The early line on Golson in the first minute of play: 4 of 4 for 101 yards and two touchdowns and a 14-0 lead that was never threatened.
"One of the things we talked about was coming out of gate strong," said Wilson, whose potent, passing offense was held to only rushing TDs in last week's 38-7 victory over Midland Valley. "We didnt do that last week, but tonight we did a great job."
But Golson was not done. He hit Steven Cobb for a 13-yard TD pass on the next possession and connected with Jerrod Jackson from 21 yards out on the fourth series of the game to take a commanding 28-0 advantage in just over 10 minutes of play.
The Cougars finally countered with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Denzel Myers to Denzel White, but it was a mere speed bump for the smooth sailing by Golson. He found Cobb for another TD pass early in the second and threw two TDs to Jaquan Wilson to make it 48-7 at halftime.
Golson played the entire third quarter and threw his eighth TD pass of the game on a 28-yarder to Donte Sumpter.
The defending state champion Seahawks (12-1) will meet Marlboro County next week at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in the Lower State championship in a rematch of last year's fight for the right to advance to the state championship game. The Bulldogs won 26-21 over Lake City on the final play of the game.
