Washington, D.C., prepared for the historical and monumental presidential inauguration by spending countless hours readying itself to shuffle one- to two-million people in and around our nation's capital.

The president-elect spent countless hours preparing himself for the office of president. He has assembled a team of advisors and staff members to assist him in carrying out the promises he has made to the American people.

As one news commentator said, this office is the "most powerful position in the world."

You may or may not agree with that. You may or may not have voted for America's next president. You may or may not feel comfortable with his agenda for America. You may or may not feel certain with where our country is going, but hope that things are turning around.

As our nation has elected a new president who begins his presidency this month, the words from the Bible bring calming comfort to our hearts.

You see, the Lord God already holds the most powerful position in the world. He tells us that in the Bible where he says, "This is what the LORD says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I take hold of to subdue nations before him and to strip kings of their armor, to open doors before him so that gates will not be shut: I will go before you and will level the mountains; I will break down gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron. I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who summons you by name. For the sake of Jacob my servant, of Israel my chosen, I summon you by name and bestow on you a title of honor, though you do not acknowledge me. I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me, so that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting men may know there is none besides me. I am the LORD, and there is no other. I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the LORD, do all these things"( Isaiah 45:1-7).

In his infinite wisdom God already knew who our president would be before we cast our ballots last November.

For that matter, God already knows how he will use the President to carry out his divine plan for the world. God did it years ago when he "took hold of the right hand" of Cyrus, a pagan ruler in Persia and used him to "subdue nations" and "strip kings of their armor." God used Cyrus, a pagan king, to defeat the Babylonian Empire.

Why?

This action allowed the Lord's people Israel to return to their homeland of Canaan and for the Savior of the world to enter this world as it was foretold, in the city of Bethlehem.

We were blessed to participate in our political process as responsible citizens of this country. We're blessed to live in a country where we enjoy the freedoms we have. But when we get worried or concerned about what is going to happen to America, or this world, rest assured that the One who truly rules the world is the LORD. The LORD who "formed the light and created the darkness!" The LORD who brings prosperity and allows disaster! The LORD who even allows the president to sit in the Oval Office! The Lord is in control!

No matter what actions are taken, or what bills are passed by the president and his administration, right or wrong, we have the assurance that God will use the president of the United States for his divine purposes that sometimes remain hidden to us. May God bless our president and our country!
