This hole can play as either a slight dogleg right or a slight dogleg left depending on the tee boxes used. A new set of tee boxes introduced on the left side in 1998 are separated from the original tees by a thicket of trees. The hole often plays into an ocean breeze and a slightly uphill fairway that plateaus before sloping down toward a water hazard at roughly 110 yards from the green. Trees line both sides of the fairway, and the hole plays 385 yards from the blue tee, 365 from the white, 350 from the green and 330 from the red. Water begins about 70 yards from the center of the green and forces a carry to the front. The green slopes fairly sharply from back to front with a slight ridge dissecting the putting surface, and the green is protected by bunkers right, left and back, and water in front. The severity of the green slope was lessened in 2003 when PennCross bentgrass was replaced by a faster A1 bent, which still makes a downhill putt treacherous. |

quotes "After a round of golf on one of the country's historic courses, the 18th is a fitting finale to a true test of your game. A tough tee shot, then a real tester of an approach into the 18th green over water, well-protected by Robert Trent Jones bunkers, and a severe slope from back to front. All you can handle to wrap up your round."
Mitch Laurance
"When the match comes to the final hole superb golfing skills are required, and hole No. 18 is `the deal breaker."
Mickey McCamish
